Run properly, a shop Instagram costs 10 to 14 hours a week — replying to DMs, batch-shooting stock, planning posts, reading the numbers. Most attar and oud shops in Muscat can carry that until shaadi season; after that, unanswered inquiries cost more than an agency does. Here is the work, hour by hour.
How many hours a week does a properly run shop Instagram take?
Start here. Hootsuite’s 2026 task checklist prices the daily work at 30 to 60 minutes for replying to comments and DMs, 15 to 30 minutes for monitoring mentions, 10 to 15 minutes for checking scheduled posts, 15 to 30 minutes for listening to trends, and 10 to 15 minutes for collecting ideas. On top of that sit weekly jobs: 1 to 2 hours planning and scheduling, 1 to 3 hours creating content in batches, 15 to 30 minutes routing posts for approval, and 30 to 60 minutes reviewing performance. Add it all up and the honest total lands between 10 and 14 hours a week.
That is a full counter shift every week, unpaid, before a single rial goes into ads. If your time at the counter is worth even 3 OMR an hour (illustrative), twelve hours a week is 36 OMR — roughly 1,800 OMR a year of owner time spent being your own social media team. For a Pakistani-owned attar shop in Ruwi or Muttrah, the morning DM check is also trust work: customers ask whether the oud is pure, what suits gifting at a shaadi, and what an elder would appreciate, and those answers are what a generic poster never gives. Brooke Monroe, quoted by Hootsuite, makes the same point from the agency side:
“Overnight conversation is the most honest audience research I’ll get all day, and it tells me where sentiment is shifting before any dashboard does.”
The tradeoff is therefore not “free versus paid”. It is your 12 weekly hours versus somebody else’s, priced in OMR, against the counter work only you can do.
What should an attar shop in Muscat actually post?
The audience justifies the effort. DataReportal’s Digital 2026: Oman puts Instagram’s advertising reach at 2.8 million people — 50.5 percent of the population — alongside 3.44 million social media identities, so half the country can see a well-made post from a Ruwi shop counter. Oman’s whole online retail market was only about US$748 million (288 million OMR) in 2025, which means discovery happens on social feeds long before it happens on any storefront site. Which means your grid, not your website, is your shop window.
Five post types carry an attar shop: new oil drops with the bottle opened on camera, bakhoor burn clips with the smoke rising, gift-set builds piece by piece, customer reviews reposted with permission, and quiet shop scenes from the shelf wall. Shaadi season runs from November through February in Oman, so gift-set builds should lead the grid now; Ramadan is expected around February 8, 2027, subject to moon sighting, and Eid al-Fitr around March 10, 2027, which puts attar and bakhoor gifting campaigns on a clock that starts in late January — six weeks before Eid. Our guide to turning Instagram reels into mithai orders during shaadi season maps the same seasonal logic for food, and the one-afternoon monthly Instagram planning method works unchanged for perfume.
Batching — creating several posts in one sitting instead of one a day — is the same habit as a family grinding a month of masalas in one Sunday session: set up once, produce ten pieces, clean up once. An hour of filming on a quiet Tuesday morning, when the souq is calm, produces two weeks of posts.
And once an order leaves the shop, ask for the review with a ready-to-paste WhatsApp line (only for customers who agreed to hear from you):
Thank you for shopping with us! If the attar brought you joy, one line on Google helps other families find our shop: [review link]. Reply STOP to opt out of these messages.
Replying to those reviews is part of the job too — Google’s own guidance treats review management as ongoing profile work, not a one-time setup.
Why do my photos come out cropped or blurry on Instagram?
Because the platform decides when you do not. Sprout Social’s 2026 image-size guide lists what happens to a wrongly sized upload: cropping that trims edges, compression that softens fine detail, letterboxing that leaves empty bands, and outright rejection by scheduling tools, which publish through stricter APIs than the apps. Meta’s own design requirements for Instagram Feed ads accept ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16, recommend 4:5, and ask for at least 1080 x 1080 pixels.
Three numbers cover almost everything a shop posts:
- 1080 x 1080 pixels (square) for the feed grid
- 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) for the most mobile screen space
- 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16) for Stories and Reels
Static images still matter more than owners assume — Sprout’s 2025 Content Benchmarks put images at 48 percent of all brand content on Facebook, so sizing protects roughly half of everything you publish. The practical rule for attar bottles: shoot in 4:5 with empty margins, keep dark glass on the same cream cloth every time, and keep any wording away from the edges so circular crops and interface overlays cannot eat it. JPG for photographs, PNG for anything with text or sharp edges.
Is boosting a post the same as running an ad?
No, and the difference decides where your money goes. Boosting — the blue button inside the Instagram app — is a one-tap payment for reach: the platform optimizes for eyeballs and likes, choosing audiences for you. Ads Manager — Meta’s full campaign tool — lets you pick the objective (WhatsApp messages, catalog sales), choose audiences including your past customers, and count results. A boost answers “who saw this?”; an ad answers “who messaged, and what did it cost?”
Boosts have a season. During shaadi-peak weekends, a 10 OMR boost on a gift-set reel to Muscat and Seeb buys local awareness cheaply, and nothing more is needed. Offers with a deadline deserve Ads Manager, because the objective becomes messages or sales rather than reach. Run the maths before either (worked example — substitute your own costs; all figures illustrative): a 12 OMR gift set with 4.50 OMR of oils and 1.50 OMR of box and card leaves 6 OMR contribution, so a 50 OMR boosted weekend needs about nine sets to break even. If two weekends produce fewer than seventeen sets combined, change the creative or the audience before spending a third.
What should a social media agency deliver for a Muscat shop?
Anything you pay monthly for should replace the hours, not just add posts. Here is what each arrangement actually covers:
| Delivered per month | Owner-run | Local freelancer | Specialist agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled posts | 12-16, batched | 12-20 | 16-30 with production |
| DM and comment replies | You, daily | Rarely included | Included, with response-time promise |
| Monthly plain-language report | Tally sheet | Screenshot dump | Numbers plus what changed |
| Ad management | Boost button | Sometimes | Full campaigns with counting |
| Community calendar | Ramadan, Eid, shaadi in your head | Partial | Ramadan, Eid, shaadi planned in advance |
| Account and content ownership | Yours | Unclear in writing | Yours, in writing |
Demand four things before signing: replies within an hour during shop hours; a monthly report in plain language; account, password, and content ownership in writing; and a calendar that already knows Eid. Published pricing exists to anchor you — one 2026 comparison of Omani agencies lists an Al Khuwair agency at 150, 300, and 550 OMR a month by package, which is a published example rather than a market average. Against the 150 OMR of owner time a month your twelve weekly hours represent, a 300 OMR retainer has to more than double your results to pay for itself; a 150 OMR package breaks even the day it genuinely saves the job.
WeProms Digital runs social media management and publishing for overseas Pakistani businesses on exactly this basis — posting, replying, and reporting in plain language, with the Islamic trading calendar built into the plan rather than discovered late.
How do I know whether any of it is working?
Count conversations, not likes. Five numbers fit on one tally sheet behind the counter: WhatsApp chats that mention Instagram, saved posts, profile visits, Google reviews that name the shop, and a simple “did you come via Instagram?” asked at the till. A monthly review needs thirty minutes and no dashboard. If a post brings three or more WhatsApp inquiries, make more like it; if a month of posting brings none, the content is wrong, not the app. A Kuwait attar shop with the same likes-but-no-orders problem traced the gap to exactly this kind of counting — the posts were working; nobody was watching the right number.
When should I stop doing it myself and hire?
Hire when two of these three hold for a month straight: the work passes ten hours a week; posting stops during the weeks that matter most, shaadi season and the run-up to Ramadan; or DMs sit unanswered for more than a day. Until then, batching plus one hour of daily replies covers a single-location shop honestly. The calendar sets the real deadline — Eid gifting plans should open six weeks before Eid al-Fitr, expected around March 10, 2027, subject to moon sighting, which means late January, which means any help you intend to hire should be in place before December ends. One principle is worth stating plainly: for a single-location shop, hiring an agency to post while nobody answers DMs within the hour destroys more value than not posting at all.
