TL;DR: The clicks are real. The lead count is not. A Lahore furniture retailer spending PKR 250,000 a month on Google Ads sees 12 tracked conversions while roughly 97 actual leads arrive each month — 85 through WhatsApp chats and phone calls the dashboard never counted. The fix is a one-day tracking job, not a bigger budget.

The Google Ads dashboard — the reporting screen inside a Google Ads account — is where most Pakistani advertisers judge their money. Furniture sellers on Ferozepur Road in Lahore, travel operators in Islamabad, and skin clinics in Karachi all read the same columns: clicks, cost, and conversions. Conversions — the actions Google records after someone interacts with an ad, such as a form submit or a tracked call — are the column that decides whether spend looks smart or wasted. That column answers a much narrower question than owners realize.

What this gets right

Click counts are honest. Google logs a click when a real person presses the ad; accidental taps inflate the number slightly, but the volume is not fiction. If the dashboard reports 4,000 clicks in a month, roughly 4,000 people landed on the site.

The traffic is also getting more serious, not less. AI Mode — Google’s chat-style version of Search that answers questions in full sentences instead of showing ten links — now carries advertising, and Search Engine Land reported that Google’s tests placing ads inside AI Mode keep expanding. More ad surfaces mean more places for a Karachi boutique or a Rawalpindi workshop to appear.

The questions behind those ads are longer and more intentional. One year of AI Mode data, analyzed by Search Engine Journal’s Greg Jarboe, found that AI Mode queries run roughly 3X longer than classic keyword searches. Pakistani buyers now type full questions like “sofa set price in Lahore under 80000 with free delivery” instead of two-word fragments. Longer questions usually signal a buyer closer to a decision, so visitor quality is not the core problem here.

Visibility failures are a separate problem with a separate fix; if the ads are not appearing at all, start with why Google Ads stop showing for Pakistani advertisers before questioning lead quality.

Before blaming the platform, assume the report is incomplete rather than wrong. The next section shows exactly where the missing leads go.

Where this breaks

Conversion tracking — the Google Ads feature that records when an ad click produces an action you value — only counts actions someone configured in advance. Google’s own documentation lists phone calls, sign-ups, and purchases as trackable conversions. Nothing gets recorded beyond what the setup includes.

Most Pakistani setups track exactly one action: the contact form. Every other path a local customer actually uses — the WhatsApp button, the tap-to-call phone number, the walk-in who saw the ad a day earlier — lands outside the report entirely.

Here’s the thing. The dashboard is not lying; it is blind on one side.

It is like counting only the customers who write their name in the shop register while two dozen others pay through JazzCash and walk out. The register is accurate. The register is also nearly empty.

Behavior data confirms where Pakistani buyers actually are. WhatsApp is used by 54 percent of internet users aged 16 and above worldwide, and the typical Android user opens WhatsApp more than 20 times a day, according to Similarweb data in DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Global Overview. Pakistani customers live inside that app. When an ad sends them to a website offering both a form and a WhatsApp button, the WhatsApp path — the one they prefer — is the one the conversion column cannot see.

Google knows the gap exists. The company’s help pages describe how to track button and phone-number clicks as conversions, including clicks on a phone number displayed on a mobile site. The feature has existed for years. In most local accounts, nobody ever configured it.

Open Goals, then Conversions, in Google Ads today. If the list shows a single action named “Form,” the mystery is solved: the phone rings all month and the platform records a tenth of it.

Smart bidding — Google’s automated system that sets bids using its own model — optimizes toward whatever conversion signal it receives. Feed the system 12 conversions a month and it steers with its eyes closed. Feed it 97 and the machine finally has a road.

Attribution — the rules deciding which ad gets credit for a lead — makes thin data worse. WordStream’s guide to Google Ads attribution models explains that data-driven attribution, now the platform default, needs substantial conversion history to distribute credit fairly. Accounts with sparse data get confident-sounding numbers built on almost nothing. A Rawalpindi importer who pauses a campaign showing “no conversions” may be pausing the exact campaign that fills the shop’s WhatsApp every evening. The levers that keep automated bidding honest are covered separately in smart bidding controls for Pakistani Google Ads accounts.

Run the PKR math on the illustrative account above. PKR 250,000 divided by 12 tracked conversions reads as PKR 20,833 per lead — terrifying, and wrong. Divide the same spend by 97 real leads and the figure is PKR 2,577 — workable for furniture margins. Same month, same budget, an eight-fold difference in the story the numbers tell.

“Keep AI-driven PPC accountable with transparent reporting, brand-safe creative guardrails, and campaign structures that preserve performance without surrendering control.”

That is Navah Hopkins, writing in Search Engine Journal’s Ask A PPC column on September 10, 2026. In Pakistani shop terms: automation is a good employee with bad eyesight. Hand over complete conversion data and the employee earns their salary.

Test any agency that quotes you against this claim: an account spending serious monthly budget with fewer than 30 tracked conversions is bidding blind, no exceptions. Fix the signal before touching the budget.

What Pakistani businesses should do instead

Track every lead path, not just the form. WhatsApp button clicks, phone-number taps, and form submits should each register as a separate conversion action, and Google’s click-tracking documentation covers the setup directly. Different paths deserve separate names because they behave differently: WhatsApp chats convert differently from long phone calls.

Connect GA4 — Google’s analytics property — and mark WhatsApp clicks and call clicks as key events, the GA4 signals that can import into Google Ads. WeProms Digital’s GA4 setup and custom configuration service builds exactly this configuration, and its Google Ads conversion tracking setup service exists for accounts whose lead column stopped matching reality.

Add one question to the WhatsApp auto-reply: “How did you hear about us?” The question is free, works in English and Roman Urdu, and catches leads that tags miss. Counter staff should ask walk-ins the same thing and note the answer in a simple register.

Review the search terms report weekly. Longer conversational queries drag in longer junk, so maintain negative keywords — the blocklist that stops ads appearing for hopeless searches — covering “free,” “jobs,” and second-hand lookalikes. Fifteen minutes every Monday catches most of it.

Change nothing else for 30 days after fixing tracking. Budget shifts, bid changes, and campaign restructuring decided on a broken conversions column just relocate the leak instead of closing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Google Ads show fewer conversions than the leads I actually get?

Because the conversions column only records actions that were configured as conversions before they happened. If the account tracks only the contact form, WhatsApp chats, phone calls, and walk-ins never enter the count. Google’s documentation supports tracking button clicks and phone-number taps, so the gap is a setup problem, not a reporting delay.

Can I track WhatsApp chats as Google Ads conversions in Pakistan?

Yes, in the practical sense most stores need. Track the tap on the WhatsApp button as a click conversion and import GA4 key events into Google Ads. Message contents stay private, but the account shows which campaigns generate chats. The WhatsApp Business API can tie actual orders back to ad clicks for deeper work.

How much does a conversion tracking fix cost?

A basic setup covering WhatsApp clicks, call clicks, and one form is a one-day job for a competent agency. Multi-location businesses and cash-on-delivery stores take longer because more lead paths need instrumenting. WeProms Digital scopes tracking fixes as fixed-price projects after a free audit, so the cost is agreed before work starts.

Is PKR 200,000 a month a good Google Ads budget for a Pakistani SME?

That budget tests one city or one service line properly, provided tracking is complete first. It is thin for national ecommerce coverage. The amount matters less than whether the account records at least 30 conversions a month; below that threshold, automated bidding struggles to learn.

How long does smart bidding take to work after tracking is fixed?

Expect 30 to 60 days and roughly 30 recorded conversions before automated bidding stabilizes on the new signal. Resist restructuring campaigns during that window, because the system needs consistent data to relearn which searches produce calls and WhatsApp chats.
