22 Pakistani Businesses, Zero AI Overview Citations: Field Report

Last updated: June 2026. Written by Hamza Ali.

Across 22 local business accounts in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad over the past quarter, one pattern keeps appearing: not a single business appears as a cited source in Google AI Overviews for queries directly related to their services. These are not small, obscure companies. They include dental clinics in DHA Lahore, car service centers in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, boutique hotels in Islamabad’s F-7 sector, and retail shops in Karachi’s Zamzama commercial area. They all rank on page one of traditional Google results for their target keywords. Zero AI citations. The disconnect between traditional ranking success and AI invisibility is the most expensive gap in Pakistani local search right now.

The pattern that repeats across every city

Every one of these 22 businesses shares three characteristics. They have a Google Business Profile. They appear in Google Maps results for local queries. Their websites rank organically for their primary service keywords. Here’s the thing. None of them appear in AI Overviews when a searcher asks “best dentist near DHA Lahore” or “car service center Gulshan-e-Iqbal reviews.”

Google’s AI Overview system operates on a completely different extraction layer than traditional local search. Google Maps results rely on proximity, review count, and Google Business Profile data. AI Overviews synthesize information from web content — blog posts, service pages, and articles that provide specific, extractable answers. The 22 businesses in this sample have invested in their Google Business Profile and local directory citations but have zero web content formatted for AI extraction.

Search Console can show whether important local queries are earning impressions and clicks, but most businesses still need manual SERP checks or specialist visibility tools to confirm whether AI Overviews cite their pages. The important pattern from this review was simple: pages with vague service copy were much harder to quote than pages with clear business names, locations, services, opening hours, and practical answers.

Most teams miss this. They assume that ranking well in traditional results means they are covered for all types of search visibility. AI Overviews run on a fundamentally different system. You can rank #1 organically and still never appear in an AI Overview if your content lacks extractable, entity-rich passages.

The drop-off occurs at the content formatting layer. All 22 businesses have correct NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data across 15-40 local citation directories. Seventeen of the 22 have more than 50 Google reviews with an average rating above 4.2. Nineteen rank in the top 5 results for their primary keyword in their city. By traditional local SEO standards, these businesses are performing well.

None have service pages written in a format Google’s AI can extract. Most service pages use generic marketing language: “We offer the best dental services in Lahore” or “Quality car maintenance at affordable prices.” Google’s AI skips these entirely. The AI needs sentences like “DentalCare Lahore offers dental implants starting at PKR 45,000 per tooth, with same-day consultation availability in DHA Phase 5, operating Monday through Saturday 9 AM to 8 PM.” Notice the difference. Specific business name. Specific service. Specific price in PKR. Specific location. Specific hours. Each of those is a data point the AI can extract and cite in an answer.

Think of it like a billboard on Mall Road in Lahore. If the sign only says “Best Services” without naming the business, the service type, or a phone number, nobody remembers it. The billboard exists, it is visible, but it communicates nothing extractable. That is exactly how Google’s AI sees most Pakistani local business websites — present in the index but useless for generating citations.

Among the broader Pakistani local search landscape, a small number of businesses do appear in AI Overviews. Analyzing their content reveals consistent patterns that the 22 businesses in this sample do not follow.

Content ElementTop AI-Cited Local Businesses22-Business Sample
Entity-rich opening paragraphYes — business name, area, services, PKR pricingNo — generic brand statements
FAQ section with specific answers5-8 Q&As per service page0-1 Q&As per page
Structured data (schema markup)Organization + FAQ + LocalBusinessBasic or missing
Blog targeting AI query triggers2-4 posts monthly0 posts or generic brand content
Google Business Profile completeness95%+ with Q&A, posts, photos60-75% basic info only

The top performers treat every page as a potential AI citation source. Their service pages read like reference entries, not marketing brochures. Their blog posts answer specific questions with data, prices, and local context. They use schema markup to explicitly tell Google’s AI what type of entity each page represents. The technical SEO for AI search visibility that these top performers implement is not advanced — it is basic structural work that most Pakistani local businesses have simply not done.

The cost of staying invisible in AI answers

Here is the calculation that matters. If a local business already receives meaningful enquiries from Google, every AI-heavy result that answers the buyer’s question before the click can affect discovery. The safest way to estimate the risk is to look at your own Search Console impressions, your call/enquiry tracking, and the queries where AI Overviews appear.

Do not use generic revenue-loss calculators as proof. Build a simple local estimate instead: list your top commercial queries, check whether AI Overviews appear, note whether your business is cited, then compare that against tracked calls, forms, WhatsApp enquiries, and average customer value.

The fix is usually practical rather than expensive: rewrite service pages to include entity-rich paragraphs, add useful FAQ sections, and implement basic Organization or LocalBusiness schema where appropriate.

Google has continued expanding AI features in Search, and Bing has also invested in AI-assisted search experiences. That does not mean every local query has changed overnight. It does mean Pakistani businesses should make their websites easier for both people and search systems to understand: clear services, clear locations, accurate structured data, helpful FAQs, and strong proof.

The three changes that move local businesses into AI Overviews

Three specific changes produce results for local Pakistani businesses. First, rewrite the opening paragraph of each service page as an entity definition that includes the business name, specific area within the city (not just “Lahore” but “DHA Phase 5, Lahore”), specific services with PKR price ranges, and operating hours. Second, add 4-6 FAQ entries per service page using the exact questions customers ask on Google — use Google’s “People Also Ask” feature to find these questions, then answer each one in 2-3 sentences with a specific number or PKR amount. Third, install Organization schema and LocalBusiness schema markup on every page so Google’s AI can identify your business as a structured entity rather than an unstructured block of text.

These three changes are not theoretical. Every local business that appeared in AI Overviews during this analysis had implemented all three. Every business that did not appear had implemented zero of them. The correlation is exact across this sample of 22 businesses spanning SEO beyond Google into Bing AI search and other AI platforms.

Key Takeaways

See this in action

How we helped a Pakistani business achieve measurable results.

Read case study
  • Zero of 22 local Pakistani businesses appear in Google AI Overviews despite strong traditional rankings — the AI citation gap is universal across Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad service businesses
  • AI Overviews use different extraction logic than traditional search — ranking well organically does not guarantee AI visibility because AI engines pull from extractable content, not from ranking position
  • Three changes produce results: entity-rich opening paragraphs on every service page, FAQ sections with specific PKR answers, and Organization plus LocalBusiness schema markup
  • The commercial risk should be estimated with your own data: compare Search Console impressions, call/form tracking, and manual AI Overview checks for your highest-intent local queries
  • The fix is practical: improve service-page clarity, FAQs, local proof, and schema markup before chasing advanced AI-search tactics
  • Google and Bing are both investing in AI-assisted search experiences, so clearer, more extractable content is a sensible defensive move
