Pakistani Local Businesses and AI Overview Citations: Field Notes

Last updated: June 2026. Written by Hamza Ali.

Across a WeProms review sample of 22 local business accounts in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad over the past quarter, one pattern kept appearing: the reviewed businesses were not cited as sources in Google AI Overviews for the service queries we checked. The sample included dental clinics in DHA Lahore, car service centers in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, boutique hotels in Islamabad’s F-7 sector, and retail shops in Karachi’s Zamzama commercial area. Many ranked well in traditional Google results, but their pages were still hard for AI answer systems to quote.

The pattern that repeats across every city

Every business in the sample shared three characteristics. They had a Google Business Profile. They appeared in Google Maps results for local queries. Their websites ranked organically for at least some priority service keywords. The gap appeared when AI Overviews summarized answers for queries like “best dentist near DHA Lahore” or “car service center Gulshan-e-Iqbal reviews” without citing the business page.

Google’s AI Overview system is not the same as a local pack or map ranking. Google Maps results can rely heavily on proximity, relevance, prominence, reviews, and Business Profile data. AI Overviews synthesize information from web content and other sources, so service pages with specific, extractable answers are easier to use than vague brochure copy.

Search Console can show whether important local queries are earning impressions and clicks, but most businesses still need manual SERP checks or specialist visibility tools to confirm whether AI Overviews cite their pages. The important pattern from this review was simple: pages with vague service copy were much harder to quote than pages with clear business names, locations, services, opening hours, and practical answers.

Most teams miss this. They assume that ranking well in traditional results means they are covered for every search experience. In practice, strong rankings do not guarantee AI Overview citations, especially when pages lack extractable, entity-rich passages.

The drop-off often occurs at the content formatting layer. In the sample, the businesses generally had correct NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data, active Google Business Profiles, and visible local search presence. Several also had strong review counts and page-one rankings. By traditional local SEO standards, many were performing reasonably well.

None have service pages written in a format Google’s AI can extract. Most service pages use generic marketing language: “We offer the best dental services in Lahore” or “Quality car maintenance at affordable prices.” AI answer systems are more likely to understand pages that clearly name the business, service, city or area, opening hours, service constraints, and verified proof. If you include prices, use figures that are real, current, and approved by the business.

Think of it like a billboard on Mall Road in Lahore. If the sign only says “Best Services” without naming the business, the service type, or a phone number, nobody remembers it. The billboard exists, it is visible, but it communicates nothing extractable. That is the practical risk for many Pakistani local business websites: present in the index, but too vague to become a useful cited source.

Among the broader Pakistani local search landscape, some businesses do appear in AI Overviews. Reviewing those pages suggests consistent content patterns that many businesses in the 22-account sample did not follow.

Content ElementStronger AI-ready pagesCommon gap in sample
Opening paragraphBusiness, area, services, proofGeneric brand statements
FAQsSpecific local answersFew or vague FAQs
Structured dataOrganization/LocalBusiness where relevantBasic or missing schema
Service detailHours, constraints, prices if approvedThin service copy
GBP supportServices, photos, reviews, hoursBasic profile info

The stronger pages treat every page as a potential answer source. Their service pages read like reference entries, not marketing brochures. Their blog posts answer specific questions with data, prices, and local context. They use schema markup to explicitly tell Google’s AI what type of entity each page represents. The technical SEO for AI search visibility that these top performers implement is not advanced — it is basic structural work that most Pakistani local businesses have simply not done.

The cost of staying invisible in AI answers

Here is the calculation that matters. If a local business already receives meaningful enquiries from Google, every AI-heavy result that answers the buyer’s question before the click can affect discovery. The safest way to estimate the risk is to look at your own Search Console impressions, your call/enquiry tracking, and the queries where AI Overviews appear.

Do not use generic revenue-loss calculators as proof. Build a simple local estimate instead: list your top commercial queries, check whether AI Overviews appear, note whether your business is cited, then compare that against tracked calls, forms, WhatsApp enquiries, and average customer value.

The fix is usually practical rather than expensive: rewrite service pages to include entity-rich paragraphs, add useful FAQ sections, and implement basic Organization or LocalBusiness schema where appropriate.

Google has continued expanding AI features in Search, and Bing has also invested in AI-assisted search experiences. That does not mean every local query has changed overnight. It does mean Pakistani businesses should make their websites easier for both people and search systems to understand: clear services, clear locations, accurate structured data, helpful FAQs, and strong proof.

The three changes that move local businesses into AI Overviews

Three specific changes usually improve AI readiness for local Pakistani businesses. First, rewrite the opening paragraph of each service page as an entity definition that includes the business name, specific area within the city (not just “Lahore” but “DHA Phase 5, Lahore”), specific services, approved price guidance where appropriate, and operating hours. Second, add 4-6 FAQ entries per service page using the exact questions customers ask on Google — use Google’s “People Also Ask” feature to find these questions, then answer each one in 2-3 sentences with specific, verified details. Third, install Organization schema and LocalBusiness schema markup on every page so Google’s AI can identify your business as a structured entity rather than an unstructured block of text.

These three changes are not theoretical. In the reviewed sample, the businesses with clearer AI-ready pages had more of these elements in place. That does not prove causation, but it is a practical checklist for SEO beyond Google into Bing AI search and other AI-influenced discovery surfaces.

  • In a 22-account WeProms sample, reviewed businesses were not cited in AI Overviews for the checked commercial local queries, even when traditional visibility looked strong
  • AI Overviews are not the same as traditional local rankings — ranking well organically does not guarantee AI visibility if pages are hard to summarize or quote
  • Three changes improve clarity: entity-rich opening paragraphs on every service page, FAQ sections with specific verified answers, and Organization plus LocalBusiness schema markup
  • The commercial risk should be estimated with your own data: compare Search Console impressions, call/form tracking, and manual AI Overview checks for your highest-intent local queries
  • The fix is practical: improve service-page clarity, FAQs, local proof, and schema markup before chasing advanced AI-search tactics
  • Google and Bing are both investing in AI-assisted search experiences, so clearer, more extractable content is a sensible defensive move
