Why Bing still deserves a deliberate effort

Google dominates search in Pakistan, and for most local consumer queries that is where the effort belongs. But Bing is not a rounding error everywhere. On Windows desktops and the Edge browser — the default on millions of enterprise machines across North America and the Gulf — Bing still holds meaningful share. If you sell B2B software, professional services, or export-facing products, a portion of your buyers type their queries into Bing, or into the Windows taskbar, which routes there.

Bing also matters because of what it feeds. Microsoft’s Copilot, ChatGPT’s web search, and parts of DuckDuckGo’s results all draw on Bing’s index and ranking. When your site is poorly represented in Bing, it tends to be poorly represented in the AI answer engines that reuse that index. Optimising for Bing is therefore partly about Bing.com traffic and partly about being citable inside AI responses.

How Bing ranks pages differently

Bing’s algorithm overlaps with Google’s, but it weights things differently, and a site tuned only for Google often underperforms on Bing for predictable reasons.

  • Exact-match keyword relevance. Bing is more literal. Where Google leans on semantic interpretation, Bing still rewards precise keyword use in titles, headings, and body copy. Pages that read naturally but never use the exact phrase can rank on Google and miss on Bing.
  • Title and meta description tags. Bing gives these heavy weight, and it still considers the meta keywords tag that Google long ago stopped using. We rewrite titles and descriptions to match what Bing rewards.
  • Anchor text. Bing values descriptive, exact anchor text more openly than Google, which filters it heavily. Clear internal anchors help more here.
  • Social signals. Bing has historically factored social engagement — especially from X and Facebook — into ranking more transparently than Google.
  • Multimedia. Bing’s image and video search is strong, and well-optimised media with correct alt text, captions, and schema performs better here than on Google.

None of this means keyword stuffing. It means writing and structuring pages so Bing’s relevance model can read them clearly.

The single biggest reason sites underperform on Bing is that they were never properly submitted. Bingbot crawls the web, but without active management, discovery is slow and incomplete.

We start by verifying the site in Bing Webmaster Tools — Bing’s equivalent of Google Search Console — and reviewing what it surfaces: crawl errors, blocked URLs, index coverage, and the keywords Bing already associates with your pages. Webmaster Tools reveals problems Google’s tools simply will not, because they are Bing-specific.

Then we connect IndexNow, the open protocol Microsoft backs for instant indexing. Once wired up, every new or updated page pings Bing (and any other participating engine) the moment it goes live, so content appears in the index in hours rather than weeks. For sites that publish regularly — blogs, product catalogues, job boards, news sections — this alone meaningfully closes the freshness gap between Google and Bing. We also submit and maintain a clean sitemap, review Bing’s crawl-control settings, and file a Bing-specific disavow where low-quality backlinks are a problem.

AI answer engines are becoming a genuine referral source, and they do not all build their index from scratch. Copilot runs on Microsoft’s stack, and ChatGPT’s live web search leans on Bing for retrieval. Being well-indexed and well-structured in Bing materially improves your chances of being cited inside those answers.

The work that helps is concrete: clear, fact-dense content an AI can extract from; schema markup — especially Organization, FAQ, Article, Product, and How-to — that labels what each page is about; and clean on-page structure with descriptive headings. We also look at entity consistency, making sure your brand name, services, and key facts are stated the same way across the site and the structured data, so an AI can reference you without ambiguity.

This is not a separate ‘AI SEO’ product bolted on top. It is mostly the disciplined version of Bing SEO, done well, with content and markup that answer questions directly.

Bing Places for local queries

If you serve a local market — a clinic in Lahore, a showroom in Karachi, a consultancy in Islamabad — Bing Places for Business is Bing’s equivalent of Google Business Profile, and it powers the local pack on Bing Maps.

We claim and verify the listing, complete every field (categories, hours, photos, services), write an accurate, keyword-aware description, and keep NAP — name, address, phone — consistent with your other citations. For multi-location businesses we manage the set as a group. Bing Places is lower-competition than Google’s map pack, which makes it a relatively efficient win in the markets where local Bing searches actually happen.

Reporting that isolates Bing’s contribution

Bing’s contribution is easy to under- or over-state if it is not measured cleanly, so we report Bing specifically rather than lumped into a single ‘organic’ line.

Each month we cover Bing impressions and clicks from Webmaster Tools, Bing and Copilot referral sessions in GA4, the keyword set currently ranking in Bing, and overall indexing status. If you use Microsoft Clarity — Bing’s free behaviour-analytics tool — we fold its session recordings and heatmaps in too. The aim is simple: you can see exactly what Bing and the AI engines send you, decide whether to invest more, and hold the work to account.

If you suspect Bing and Copilot traffic is slipping past you, tell us about the site and we will run a Bing-specific audit first.
