How X Ads actually work (and where they earn their keep)
X — still Twitter to most of the audience — sells attention in a feed that moves faster than almost any other platform. A tweet’s useful life is measured in hours, the timeline rewards recency and reply velocity, and the creative that performed on Monday can be invisible by Wednesday. That makes X Ads a discipline of speed, relevance and tight audience work, not the slow-compounding play you get from search or evergreen social.
We run X Ads for two kinds of brief. The first is amplification: a launch, a piece of research, a product drop or a point of view that needs to reach a precise audience in a precise window. The second is always-on demand — B2B and tech brands, media companies, fintech and crypto projects, anyone whose buyers actually live on the timeline. For mass-market consumer retail in Pakistan, X is rarely the lead channel, and we’ll say so in the audit rather than take the budget.
Pixel, Conversions API and getting credit for your sales
Most X accounts we inherit have one of two tracking problems. Either the X pixel was never installed, so every campaign optimises blind toward clicks. Or it fires client-side only, which means Safari ITP and iOS privacy controls strip the cookies before the conversion can be matched back to the ad.
We fix both. The pixel goes on the site with the right conversion events defined — sign-ups, leads, purchases, whatever your funnel actually values. Then we stand up the X Conversions API server-side so events reach X even when the browser blocks them. Event match quality gets checked inside Ads Manager, and we cross-reference against GA4 so the two platforms agree within reason. The payoff is that X’s algorithm has real outcomes to optimise toward instead of guessing from clicks.
Audiences: followers, lookalikes and tailored lists

X’s targeting is what makes the channel interesting. The signals here are conversational — what people tweet about, who they follow, what they search for — and that lets us build audiences you can’t replicate on Meta or Google.
A typical audience stack for an engagement includes:
- Follower lookalikes, seeded from your account or a relevant competitor’s, then extended to users with similar behaviour.
- Tailored audiences uploaded from your CRM or customer file, for retargeting and suppression lists.
- Keyword targeting on conversations, searches or tweets, for active intent around a topic.
- Interest and device targeting, layered with geo when location matters.
The skill is in the balance. Go too narrow and you cap your own reach; go too broad and you pay for impressions to people who’ll never care. We tune that against CPM and downstream conversion data every week.
Creative built for a feed with no memory
Creative is where most X budgets leak. A tweet gets written, boosted, and left to run for a fortnight while its engagement decays to nothing. On a platform this fast, that’s burning money.
We build creative on a refresh cadence that matches the feed. Promoted tweets are written to sound like tweets, not display ads — short, opinionated, useful — with hook variations tested against each other. Video is cut to X’s specs for in-feed and pre-roll placement. Follower campaigns get distinct copy from awareness campaigns, because the job is different. And we look at what already works on the organic account and amplify that rather than inventing a parallel voice.
Structure, bidding and budget
Campaign architecture matters more on X than people expect. We structure by objective — reach, video views, engagement, website traffic, app installs, leads — so each campaign gives the algorithm one clear outcome to optimise. Ad groups carry the audience and creative variations. Bid strategy is set deliberately: auto bid where the goal is efficient reach, target bid where we need to defend cost per result. Budgets are allocated by performance, paused where they underperform, and scaled only after they prove themselves. Frequency is watched so a tired creative isn’t shown to the same user five times in a day.
Reporting that connects X to your funnel
How we helped a Pakistani business achieve measurable results.
X in isolation tells you almost nothing. We pull spend, impressions, CPM, engagement rate and cost per result from Ads Manager, then connect them to what happens next — traffic in GA4, leads and revenue in your CRM, view-through impact where it’s measurable. That lives in a Looker Studio dashboard, or one you already use, so X sits next to Meta, Google and email rather than as a number on its own. You get a clean read on whether the channel is pulling its weight.
Is X Ads the right channel for you?
It depends on who you’re trying to reach and what you’re selling. X works hardest for B2B, tech, media, fintech and any brand whose buyers are opinion-formers on the timeline. It works less well for mass consumer retail or audiences who aren’t on the platform at all. Part of our audit is an honest answer to that question before any spend is committed — if Meta, Google or LinkedIn would serve you better, we’ll say so.
If you’re running X Ads already and the numbers don’t add up, or you want to test the channel properly with tracking that actually works, talk to us and we’ll scope an engagement around your objectives.
