How we manage Google Display Ads across the Display Network

Display is the side of Google Ads that runs banners on millions of third-party websites, apps, and YouTube surfaces rather than text ads on the search results page. The mechanics look simple — upload a few images, pick some audiences, and let Google distribute the ads — but the defaults will quietly spend your budget on mobile game interstitials, parked domains, and utility apps where no human ever registers your brand. Our job is to keep that spend on viewable, relevant placements in front of the audience segments you actually want to reach.

Why default display campaigns waste money

When a Responsive Display Ad launches on Google’s optimised targeting with no exclusions, the algorithm finds cheap impressions wherever it can. In practice that means children’s games, file converters, and low-quality aggregator sites. The placement report fills up with URLs you have never heard of, Active View viewability sits in the 40s, and the campaign reports a low CPM that hides the fact almost none of the impressions were actually seen.

The other common failure is measurement. Awareness and remarketing campaigns get judged on last-click conversions, which is the wrong lens for display. A banner that nudged someone to search your brand three days later gets zero credit, so the campaign looks like it is losing money even when it is doing its job. We fix both sides — the placements and the attribution model — so the numbers reflect what the work is actually doing.

Display lives or dies on audience quality. We build ad groups around the targeting layers that match the goal:

  • Affinity and in-market audiences for upper-funnel awareness — people whose browsing history suggests a sustained interest in your category
  • Custom intent segments built from the search terms people typed into Google, for prospecting closer to a purchase decision
  • Customer Match lists from your first-party email data, and remarketing lists fired by GA4 conversion events, for retargeting past visitors
  • Demographics, household income, and parental status layered onto the audiences above where they matter
  • Managed placements on hand-picked sites when you want the brand appearing in specific editorial environments rather than open network inventory

Each targeting layer ships with a placement exclusion list from day one, not after the first invoice.

Responsive Display Ads done properly

Responsive Display Ads are the default format — you supply landscape and square images, logos, headlines, and descriptions, and Google assembles the sizes. Most accounts submit a single landscape image and call it done, which produces a Poor ad strength and weak delivery. We build RDAs with full asset coverage: multiple landscape and square images, short and long headlines, business name, and logo variants, then iterate until ad strength reads Good or Excellent.

For clients with strict brand guidelines we also build static and HTML5 banners in the fixed sizes that still matter — 300x250, 728x90, 160x600, 300x600 — and run them as uploaded ads so the creative renders exactly as designed rather than being reassembled by Google.

Bidding, frequency, and viewability

Bidding on display depends on the goal. Awareness work usually runs on vCPM (cost per thousand viewable impressions) or Target CPM; remarketing and prospecting with a conversion goal run on Maximize Conversions or Target CPA once the pixel has enough data. We set frequency caps at the campaign or ad group level — typically three to five impressions per user per day — so the same person does not see your banner until they actively dislike it.

Viewability is the metric we watch most closely after launch. Active View viewability tells you what share of impressions were at least 50% on-screen for at least one second. We use it to hunt down low-viewability placements in the report and exclude them, rather than chasing a low CPM that buys invisible impressions.

Reporting that reflects how display actually works

Read case study

A monthly report built only on last-click conversions will misrepresent any display campaign. We wire Google Ads to GA4, surface view-through conversions alongside click-through, and report reach, frequency, CPM, CTR, and viewability in a Looker Studio dashboard. That gives your team a clear picture of how many distinct people you reached, how often they saw the ad, and whether the spend is producing viewable impressions in the right places.

For Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad brands running Pakistan-first campaigns, the Display Network is one of the cheapest ways to build local awareness and retarget site visitors, and we manage it end to end — from creative to placement hygiene to reporting. If your current display budget is going to apps and parked domains instead of your audience, talk to us about a placement audit.
